This board has gotten kind of quiet lately. I’ll see if this will get something started.
I am still waiting to find out if I get a ticket, so I guess I’m not an “official” birgin yet, but hopefully.
I have two things I want to talk about. They’re kind of related, so I’ll just put them both on this one post.
I know a few ‘burners’ who have gone multiple times, and I have read about Burning Man, of course. I am going with anticipation and excitement for a new experience, even after all I have experienced in my lifetime, and if I understand it correctly, everyone who will be part of Camp Birgin is in a similar situation. (except for the age, of course) We know about BM, but only Think we know what our individual experience will be like. It will all be new.
Returning burners know what to expect and fully get into the Burning Man experience. But what of us that have never been? We will be popped into a world we have only heard about and spend the first part of our journey just looking at the scenery from afar? As a group, will we be able to become immersed in the culture as fast as we would if we were in a different group, one composed of returnees as well as virgins?
Will we cling together because we have this “newness” in common, or will we all disperse and jump into it like gangbusters?
These questions are rhetorical, just something for us to think about.
With these questions,I am not knocking the concept of Camp Birgin. I am all in favor of it. I think this will be a unique experience most people don’t have the opportunity to see and I am looking forward to this perspective of Burning Man. I am just curious as to how quickly we will stop feeling like outsiders. For me I expect to be totally into it before the first day is over. Or maybe as soon as the first day begins. But you never know.
Another thing I am curious about is radical inclusion for those of us who are not accustomed to practicing that.
On a personal note, I am a part time nudist. Meaning I have gone to nudist camps a few times, but not often. My first experience was a clothing optional beach. I kept my bathing suit on until I saw a few people who were nude, then I felt less awkward undressing, but I was never completely relaxed that time.
Later I also went to a nudist resort where everyone was nude. There I had no problem joining in right away. I was very relaxed and enjoyed the openness and non-judgmental attitude from everyone.
I have also gone to a clothing optional camp where most of the people remained clothed. Even after having experienced this before, I was slower to be nude there until I saw others that were nude.
So even in settings where it was expected, I still had reservations at first.
However, in Burning Man I plan to just get nude whenever I feel like it whether others are nude or not, as the concept of Radical Inclusion should allow that with no embarrassment. It is my assumption from what I hear that most really do not care what people wear or don’t wear.
But what about us Birgins? We are not Most Burners. We haven’t experienced Burning Man with all of its idiosyncrasies. In life we see people in various forms of weird clothing, but you just don’t see a nude person walking down the street every day, and if you do it’s generally not accepted as being normal in that situation. I mean by this that we have preconceived notions ingrained in us that determine how we feel about a certain situation, and just because we are in Burning Man we will still hold on to those feelings, at least for a while.
When we are at Burning Man, knowing people are going to be nude and even seeing them around the Playa will be different than actually having a nude person in your midst.
So with that in mind, with a group of first timers, will I be immediately accepted at Camp Birgin if I stroll in nude some morning? Or will it take a breaking in period for you to get used to it? Will it be embarrassing for you, since most people haven’t experienced this? Or are you going to be able to accept nudity from a fellow Birgin as if that was something you see every day?
Or for that matter, will any of you be joining me in a non-sexual relaxing enjoyment of nudity, or will I be the only one in the camp worrying about sunburn?
So what are your thoughts on these matters? If any.
